The traders of Chandigarh have opposed the move of the civic body to start a night food street in City Centre --Sector 17 here.
Stating that their business will be affected due to this, the traders said that the night food street should not come up in Sector 17. They said the night food street will dampen their business further as the market is already facing dull response.
In a meeting held by Traders Association Sector 17, repercussions of creation of proposed night food street under the new overbridge was discussed.
Kamaljit Singh Panchhi, President of the Traders Association Section 17, urged the Administration, Municipal Corporation and Chief Architect to view their problem and allow either general market or 24 hours food services so that there is regular visit of public and other traders get advantage of the hustle and bustle in the market.
After facing downfall in their sale during the construction period of overbridge for nearly two years, the traders are not ready to bear more burden, he said.
As per MCC plans, under the overbridge’s deck, there is a provision for about 40 booths. And, the MCC has decided to start first round-the-clock food street in the city. The food street will come up below the under-construction overbridge, which will connect Anand Theatre with KC Theatre in Sector 17.
The traders association members have now decided to meet UT chief architect to impress upon higher authorities to consider their demands. Earlier, they had met city’s mayor and municipal commissioner.
Facing stiff competition with lavish malls that have come up in Industrial Area here, the UT traders had recently demanded revamping of Sector 17--the commercial complex of city. The traders association had also requested the UT to start the construction of multi level parking soon. The MCC has planned to construct multi-storey parking near Gurdev Studio. The parking opposite Gurudev Studio will have three basement floors for four wheelers and a surface level for two wheelers.
