Tewari asks Punjab Govt to withdraw house tax

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Thursday lashed out at Akali-BJP government in Punjab for imposing house tax on the people of the state.

“It simply amounts to picking pockets of helpless people to fill the empty coffers of the state,” he said in a statement issued on Thursday.   Demanding immediate withdrawal of the tax, he said that it was not only exorbitant but absolutely uncalled for.

Tewari said that the state government appears to be trying to plug small holes in an otherwise sinking ship by imposing arbitrary taxes on common people.

“As if the backbreaking electricity bills are not enough to shatter the economic equilibrium of the common man, the Akali-BJP government has come out with a highly insensitive and ruthless house tax thus making life more difficult for everybody,” he said.

Tewari, who represents ludhiana parliamentary constituency, advised the state government that these taxes were not going to retrieve the economy, which is in total shambles due to its own mismanagement.

The Government should better build up the trust of the people and the investors that can lead to generation of revenue, he said adding that if the government thinks that it will improve its economy by picking pockets of people it is badly mistaken.
