To stop the misuse of water, Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh would soon enforce mandatory use of tertiary water connection by the residents of the city.
This tertiary water connection will be mandatory for those who need to water their lawns and wash their cars.
According to the latest report of MCC, the residents of VIP sectors consume 2,000-2,50 “Soon, this connection will be mandatory and if any resident of the city does not take the connection for the purpose of watering lawns and washing cars, then their water tariff will increase in slabs,” said an MCC official. The move of the MCC is aimed at filling the gap between demand and supply of water in Chandigarh.
Recently, a report submitted by MCC officials to UT Administration stated that there is a gap of 29 Million Gallon Daily (MGD) between the demand and supply.
The reason behind the shortage of potable water is also the leakage. About 19 MGD of water is going down to the drain because of leakage.
Above 200 tertiary water connections have been taken by the residents so far but MCC has got a bitter response to its several public notices.
Meanwhile, a team of MCC is all geared up to challan the city residents who will be observed misusing the potable water. A MCC official informed that the process of charging challans will start from April 15, 2013. In 2012, MCC had issued 1,000 challans while in 2011, only four challans were issued for misusing water.
According to the MCC officials, the city is receiving 87 MGD water against a demand of 116 MGD. To accomplish the demand, 20 MGD water is processed in the plants situated in Mohali and Raipur Kurd. This processed water is for the purpose of irrigation as well as other purposes like washing cars, added official.
