Suresh Arora would be the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab. He replaces Sumedh Singh Saini who will be on leave till the lok Sabha elections.
The Election Commission of India appointed Arora, a 1982 batch IPS officer after Saini went on leave coinciding with the polls.
Earlier, the Punjab Government had sent a panel of three senior IPS officers to the Election Commission of India for replacing Chief Secretary Rakesh Singh had forwarded a panel of three senior most IPS officers — including 1981 batch officer GD Pandey — currently serving as DGP-cum-Commandant General of Punjab Home Guards, 1982-batch Sanjeev Gupta — serving as the DGP Security and Vigilance, Punjab State Power Corporation limited, and 1982-batch Suresh Arora — serving as the DGP-cum-Chief Director, Vigilance Bureau — to the central poll panel to be appointed as the State Director General of Police (DGP) during Saini’s leave
period. Incumbent Saini is proceeding on leave from April 4 — Friday, apparently pre-empting the ECI’s move to remove him from the post of top cop considering series of complaints against him by the Opposition Congress. The top cop sent his “leave” request late Wednesday evening to the central poll panel, via the State Home Department. “His leave has been accepted by the Commission, and a panel of three IPS officers has been asked as the post could not be kept vacant in view of general elections,” said the State Chief Electoral Officer VK Singh. Punjab Government had all along been refusing to remove Saini maintaining that two elections have been held since his appointment as the DGP.
