Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal on Wednesday termed the passing of resolutions issuing directions to the State Government against Satluj-Yamuna link (SYl) canal as the “final burial” to the issue.

“Punjab Assembly today took historic decision and with this, final burial has been given to SYl canal,” said Sukhbir while addressing media after the special session was concluded.

The special Session of the Punjab Assembly unanimously passed two resolutions on the SYl issue, directing the state government not to “hand over land to any agency” and also “not to allow anyone to work for the construction of the Sutlej Yamuna link canal”.

Sukhbir said the land has now been transferred to the rightful owners.

“The Assembly has given unanimous direction to the state government and officials and we are bound by this decision...keeping that in view this (SYl) chapter is closed,” he said.

He maintained that the state government and its officials are bound to obey the directions of Punjab Assembly. “A committee under the Chief Secretary will be formed to access the cost and royalty of river waters provided to other States,” he said.

Sukhbir also said a delegation from the Punjab Government would soon meet the President to apprise

him of the decision of the State legislature.
