Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish a cargo hub at Mohali alongside the international airport.

Sukhbir, during Modi’s visit to inaugurate the civil air terminal of the international airport at Mohali, apprised him that a cargo terminal was necessary to give a fillip to industry as well as exports.

He said that besides facilitating import of industrial goods, a cargo terminal would also encourage agriculture and horticulture exports from the State, and this would give a boost to flower and exotic vegetable exports from the State, said Deputy Chief Minister’s media advisor Jangveer Singh.

Sukhbir said that, presently all equipment being imported by industry was transported to Delhi and then had to be flown to Chandigarh adding to costs besides delays in delivery.

He said that having a cargo terminal at Mohali would boost industrial production in the region and also have a positive impact on the economy of the area.
