To analyse the party’s “not-so-good” performance during the recently-concluded lok Sabha elections, the Shiromani Akali Dal leadership has decided to put its head together with its leaders from the district level for three consecutive days, starting from June 2.
The party president and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Badal has called district-wise meetings of senior party leaders at party head office on June 2, 3 and 4, said SAD secretary and spokesperson, Daljit Singh Cheema.
Cheema said that these meetings would be presided over by party president in which old office bearers of the district units, MlAs, former MlAs, Member of Parliament, SGPC members and other senior leaders would participate.
The meetings would deliberate upon the new body of the party and the steps to strengthen the party at the grass root level, he said.
It is believed that party would evaluate its performance and its dwindling vote share, besides the Aam Aadmi Party making inroads in the state. SAD alone has bagged four seats out of the 10 it contested, in coalition with the BJP which secured two seats — taking the alliance’s tally to six.
Even as the alliance has improved its previous tally of five seats during 2009 polls, the share of its seats has remained the same. The sign of worry for the party is a sharp fall in its vote share, that too just about two years after returning to power in the state.
Cheema said that according to the schedule finalized for the meetings, on June 2, the meetings of party’s district units of Moga, Mansa, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda, Fazilka, Ferozepur, and Faridkot would be held starting from 11 am. On June 3, the first meeting would be held at 11 am of Mohali district followed by Ropar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur, Barnala, ludhiana, and Patiala.
Cheema said that on June 4, the meetings will be held with the leaders from Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Gurdaspur, Amritsar and Tarn Taran.
