Haryana Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma on Wednesday announced that the State Government has decided to evolve a full proof and modern system of free, fair and peaceful elections to student councils and pilot it in a few campuses in the next semester of the current academic session.
Based on the learning from these pilots, a pan Haryana electoral system i.e. driven by IT would be rolled in all the colleges and universities within first eight to ten weeks of the next academic session as per lyngdoh Committee Report, said Ram Bilas Sharma after an interaction with the Committee of Vice Chancellors set up by the Government to conduct students union election in Haryana.
The BJP-led Haryana Government had last year constituted a four-member committee for making arrangements for student union elections to be conducted in colleges and universities of the State. The elections to students' unions in colleges and universities of Haryana have not been conducted for the last 20 years.
The Indian National lok Dal's youth wing, INSO had in August held protests outside various universities to demand conduct of students' union elections in the State.
The elections to the student bodies were banned in 1996 by the then Chief Minister Bansi lal, in view of the unruly and violent behaviour of some students group at that time.
The students' union election had remained a key poll issue in Haryana, however, the ban was not lifted during the INlD as well as Congress regime in the past one decade in the State.
