Students election in Hry; meeting to be held

After Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) protest at Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak on Friday to press for demand of students’ body elections, Haryana Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma has decided to convene a meeting on the issue on November 15.

The Education Minister on Friday said that a meeting of four-member committee constituted for conducting students’ union elections in universities and colleges in the state, would be held in his office at Chandigarh on November 15.

The Minister said that Vice-Chancellor, Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, Tankeshwar Kumar was the chairman of this committee whereas Vice-Chancellors of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Prof. Bijender Kumar Punia and Indira Gandhi University, Meerpur, Dr. Madan lal were nominated as Member Secretary of the Committee.

Regarding the protest of INSO, youth wing of Indian National lok Dal at MDU, Rohtak for students’ election today, Sharma said that the meeting has been scheduled on November 15 to review the report of the Committee and to discuss the issue.

He also urged the students not to waste time in protests.

The BJP led Haryana Government had last year announced to hold students’ union polls, albeit, indirectly.

Notably, the elections to students’ unions in colleges and universities of Haryana have not been conducted for the last 20 years. The elections to the student bodies were banned by the then Chief Minister, Bansi lal, in 1996 in view of the unruly and violent behavior of some students group at that time.

Even as students’ union election remained a key poll issue in Haryana, the ban was not lifted during the INlD as well as Congress regime in the past one decade in the state.

Earlier, the INSO had in August protested outside various universities to demand conduct of students’ union elections in the State.
