Solar power tariff: JERC to hold hearing on Sep 22

The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) will hold public hearing on September 22 in Chandigarh over the issue of deciding the tariff for selling of solar power.

In its last hearing held on August 21 with CREST (Chandigarh Renewable Energy Science and Technology Promotion Society), the JERC had decided to conduct a public hearing at Chandigarh before finalizing the solar tariffs.

Hearing the review petition of CREST on fixing the solar tariffs, the JERC had decided to increase the tariff for selling of solar power. The JERC had decided to review its order dated April 11, when the Commission had fixed a low tariff of Rs1.13 per unit for CREST to sell solar power to UT Electricity Department.

The JERC had in its orders issued on April 11 approved the selling of solar power to the UT Electricity Department at the rate of Rs1.13 per unit, as against Rs8.75 per unit which the CREST had demanded in a petition filed last year on behalf of the UT Department of Science and Technology.

Now the Commission’s decision to increase the solar power tariff is likely to give a major boost to ambitious model solar city programme of Chandigarh.JERC in its recent orders issued had stated, “The Commission after hearing the representatives of the CREST and going through the documents is of the opinion that the order dated April 11, requires review.”
