A day after child abuse scandal rocked a shelter home for destitute girls in Chandigarh, the UT Administration has ordered the UT Social Welfare department to take charge of the destitute home from the NGO, which was running it.
UT Deputy Commissioner Mohd Shayin on Tuesday ordered the UT Social Welfare department to take over the charge of Bal Niketan, which is being run by an NGO for orphan girls in Sector 15 here.
An inquiry report had on Monday revealed that a 50-year-old supervisor at Bal Niketan molested seven inmates of the shelter home for months. Bal Niketan Society runs the facility and the Social Welfare department had submitted the report to UT Deputy Commissioner-cum-president of the society on Monday.
The accused has been identified as Manish Arora, a father of two daughters. The report also claimed that he used to molest girls. The report further added that the two attendants of the home — Manjit Kaur and Meena Sharma — did not report the incident to the concerned authorities.
However, the matter came to light this month, after a complaint was received on child helpline number 1098 from the Bal Niketan inmates. After the complaint was forwarded to the Social Welfare department, orders for an inquiry were issued and a committee was set up to inquire into the matter. The UT police had on Monday registered an FIR against accused Manish Arora in the case.
