Sidhu pays farmers from his own pocket

Punjab Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday gave cheques of Rs 15 lakh each to farmers who lost their crops to fire in Amritsar.  Sidhu gave the money to the distressed farmers from his own pocket, thereby, fulfilling a promise that he made to the farmers in April this year.

The farmers had lost their crop in a fire at Rajasansi in Amritsar. Sidhu paid compensation from his own pocket in addition to the Government grant.

The farmers of Amritsar’s Rajasansi area had, in April this year, lost their crop after a fire destroyed 202 acre of their agricultural land.

Sidhu had then said that he would contribute to relief for farmers from his own pocket in addition to the Government’s compensation granted to them. Sidhu fulfilled his promise by distributing the cheques on Wednesday.

“I do television. I earn money. So there is no harm in compensating the farmers,” Sidhu had said in April.
