Sexual harassment by cops: Punjab SC panel seeks SSP report within a week

Taking cognizance of an incident that took place in Tarn Taran district — where a dalit girl was forced for a sexual favour by the police personnel — Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes has written a hard hitting letter to Tarn Taran district police chief advocating strong action against the accused.

Panel’s chairman Rajesh Bagha, in a Press communiqué, said that it was very unfortunate that the custodians of law and order are violating the law to indulge in such a heinous crime.  The Commission has directed the SSP to initiate action against the accused and send compliance report within a week. “An innocent dalit girl was intimidated by Punjab Police personnel for sexual favour. When the girl refused, they resorted to power tactics and terrorised the girl,” said Bagha.

He said that even after the girl approached the SHO, he blatantly refused to lodge the complaint and pressurised the girl to keep mum on this issue. “SC panel has taken suo moto has asked the SSP Tarn Taran to initiate action against the accused and send the compliance report to the commission within a week,” he added.
