Sale of lED bulbs touches 50,000 daily in Haryana

The daily sales of lED bulbs in Haryana has touched the 50,000-mark with more than nine lakh lED bulbs being distributed in the State so far under the ‘Unnat Jyoti by Affordable lEDs for All’ (UJAlA) Scheme in the state, a government spokesman said on Saturday.

The spokesman of the Power Department said that Energy Efficiency Services limited (EESl), a joint venture of PSUs under the Union Ministry of Power, was distributing about 50,000 lED bulbs per day in the State.

Being currently implemented in the operation circles of Gurgaon, Faridabad, Bhiwani, Hisar, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Ambala, Sonipat, Karnal, Panipat and Rewari, the scheme would cover the entire State by the end of this month.

UJAlA lED bulbs are currently available at the sub-divisional offices (SDOs) of DISCOMS. Under the scheme, 9-W lED bulbs, equal to 65 W, are made available for an upfront payment of just `75 per bulb with technical warranty of three years. An lED bulb has a life expectancy of 25,000 hours.

Under the scheme, lED bulbs are being made available at one-fourth the market price, as a 9W lED bulb costs about `300 in the market. Each lED bulb helps a consumer save between `160 and `400 every year, enabling him to recover the cost in less than a year.

The lED bulbs being distributed under UJAlA scheme are of superior quality with a total failure rate of just 0.31 per cent. EESl would also provide free-of-cost replacement for all technical faults for three years. During the distribution period, replacements could be carried out through any of the distribution counters operating within the city. After the distribution ends, retail stores would be designated where replacements could be done, the spokesman said.

The UJAlA scheme was launched nation-wide by the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, in January, 2015.  Under the scheme, about ten crore lED bulbs have to be sold in the country within one year of the launch.
