Shiromani Akali Dal on Sunday urged the Congress party to desist from installing statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, on her 33rd death anniversary falling on Monday, saying that the action would amount to rubbing salt on the wounds of the Sikh community.
Punjab has already paid a heavy price for the Congress party’s misdeeds, said SAD spokesperson and senior leader Virsa Singh Valtoha.
He said that the Sikh community has already suffered a lot at the hands of the Congress party in the past and if they install a statue of Indira Gandhi in Punjab, it will amount to rubbing salt on their wounds as
“she has caused maximum damage to Punjab, particularly the Sikh community”.
Valtoha said that the Sikhs can never forget Indira Gandhi’s action against Akal Takht—Sikhs’ highest temporal seat, and other Sikh religious places.
“No Sikh can ever forget 1984 because Indira Gandhi was the sole reason for worst ever genocide of Sikhs which took place in this country,” he said.
He said that announcement of the Congress party to install statue of Indira Gandhi at ludhiana has come as a shocker for the Sikh community and it is highly intolerable for it.
“If Congress goes ahead with its proposal, it will vitiate the state’s peaceful atmosphere and bitterness will come in relationship between different communities,” said Valtoha urging the Congress party to avoid such a situation which can lead to non-harmonious relationships and disturb peace and tranquility of Punjab.
