SAD to contest civic polls on party symbol

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Sunday declared that it would contest the ensuing Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections in Punjab on the party symbol — the weighing scale. The six municipal corporations, and 123 municipal councils and nagar panchayats of the State are going for polls on February 22 and 26 respectively.

Akali Dal has already made it clear that it would contest the civic body polls in coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).  The saffron party has also indicated that it would also be contesting the municipal polls on its own party symbol — the lotus. “The party candidates will use the party symbol ‘scales’ in the ensuing Municipal Corporation, Municipal Committee and Nagar Panchayat elections,” said the SAD secretary and spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema, who is also the State Education Minister.

He said that the party president Sukhbir Badal has directed all the district observers of the party to ensure that the candidates of the party contesting these elections use the party symbol. “The letter of authority has been prepared in the party head office and will be delivered to the party observers without any delay,” he said.
