The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal's list of leaders facing taint on Wednesday saw another addition. A Mohali local court awarded former Minister and senior Akali leader Sucha Singh langah three-year imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case. Already, senior party leaders - former Minister Bibi Jagir Kaur, and sitting Agriculture Minister Tota Singh - have been convicted by the courts and are, presently, out on bail. This apart, State Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia has been facing the heat for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore drug case.
Akali's Chief Parliamentary Secretary Avinash Chander is also in soup after his name surfaced in the drug case, and was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the matter. Former Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Bibi Jagir Kaur was convicted in 2012 for forcing her daughter to undergo an abortion and was sentenced to five-year imprisonment for illegal confinement and forced abortion of her daughter.
Presently, she is out on bail during the pendency of her appeal in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Tota Singh was also convicted in 2012 for misuse of official resources during SAD-BJP's 1997-2002 regime. He is also out on bail after being sentenced to one-year imprisonment and his appeal is pending before the higher court.
