To lodge a protest against the appointment of Justice (retired) Mehtab Singh Gill as Punjab lokpal, besides the issue of making mandatory the helmets for women in Chandigarh, a delegation of SAD-BJP, led by SAD president Sukhbir Badal to meet Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore on Thursday.
The delegation would comprise of core committee members including senior leaders and legislators from both parties.
Giving this information, SAD’s spokesman and former education minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said that it is not appropriate to appoint a person known for his long association with the Congress party, who even had worked for it, on the prestigious post of lokpal.
“A joint delegation of SAD-BJP would hand over a memorandum to the Governor, containing details about the role played by Justice Gill to help the Congress during elections,” he said.
SAD leader said that apart from it, the delegation would urge the Governor to direct the UT Administration to revoke the notification making it mandatory for Sikh women to wear helmet as it had changed the definition of a Sikh women while making amendment in the Motor Vehicles Rules.
“The UT’s decision has hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. The decision has been widely criticized by the Sikh organizations including Akal Takhat Sahib — the highest authority of Sikh panth. The delegation would put its full weight behind the move seeking revocation of the controversial UT notification,” he said.
