With more than 100 deaths occurring on city roads every year and pedestrian or cyclists accounting for more than 50%, Chandigarh administration has decided to make their safety its top priority. Chairing the meeting of State level road safety council here on Monday, Vijay Kumar Dev, adviser to administrator, asked Chandigarh Police to identify black spots and install cameras and sensors on the mouths of the circles within 3 months to enable automatic challaning.

The was attended by officials of UT Police, Administration, MC and some representatives of different NGOs. It was also decided that every Zebra Crossing will have a yellow line marked where ‘STOP’ and ‘RUKE’ in Hindi sign would be written on the road.  It was also decided that an awareness drive would be conducted to sensitise women on wearing of helmets. This drive would also be used to bring about awareness on road safety among school and college students.

The administration has also decided to come down heavily on auto drivers violating traffic laws like overloading   and using black tarpaulins which reduces transparency and visibility. A Road Safety Manual is being prepared in 3 languages by Arrive Safe NGO. The same will be available as guide book  for people applying for a driver’s license where a written test of traffic laws and road safety codes is considered to be important component of driving.
