BJP leader and Jalandhar’s former MP Sushil Kumar Rinku on Sunday intensified the political landscape in Jalandhar with a legal notice served to Punjab’s former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, alleging defamatory remarks made against him. The move comes just days before the highly anticipated by-elections in Jalandhar West, slated for July 10, adding significant drama to an already heated campaign season.
Rinky, addressing the media in Jalandhar, vehemently refuted the allegations leveled by Channi during a recent public address. He described the accusations as “baseless and malicious”, aimed at tarnishing not only his reputation but also that of his family.
“I come from a respectable family that has dedicated itself to serving Jalandhar through my tenures as MLA and MP. Yet, Channi Sahab has resorted to unfounded allegations, claiming that I am involved in drug peddling, lotteries, gambling, robbery, theft, and snatching,” Rinku stated emphatically.
Accompanied by his legal counsel, Rinku disclosed that a comprehensive legal notice comprising six pages had been dispatched to Channi. The notice demanded that Channi substantiate his claims with concrete evidence or issue a public apology for the defamatory statements made against Rinku. It underscored the profound impact of Channi’s remarks, which have not only harmed Rinku’s personal and professional integrity but also subjected him to unwarranted public scrutiny and harassment.
“We have provided Channi Sahab with an opportunity to rectify his slanderous assertions. If he fails to respond appropriately, we will pursue legal recourse to protect my client's reputation and seek redressal for the damages caused,” Sareen asserted.
Rinku further lamented the personal toll inflicted by Channi's allegations, expressing dismay over the sudden turn in their relationship. “I had once congratulated Channi on his electoral victory and maintained a cordial relationship with him. It is deeply regrettable that he has chosen to tarnish my image and that of my family in such a public manner,” Rinku remarked, showcasing a video recording of Channi's accusatory remarks during a campaign event.
The legal notice, which outlined the significant repercussions of the alleged defamation on Rinku’s public standing and emotional well-being, underscored the seriousness of the issue. It highlighted the widespread dissemination of Channi’s accusations through social media channels, exacerbating the damage inflicted on Rinku’s reputation within the political fraternity and the broader community.
“The deliberate intent behind Channi’s slanderous statements is evident. They have not only defamed my client but also undermined his ability to serve the people of Punjab effectively,” Sareen emphasized.
Political analysts are closely monitoring the fallout from Rinku’s legal challenge to Channi, anticipating potential ramifications on the upcoming by-elections in Jalandhar West. The timing of these developments has injected added tension into an already competitive electoral landscape, influencing voter sentiment and campaign strategies in the final days leading up to the polls.
The controversy has sparked intense debate across political circles, highlighting the high-stakes nature of Punjab’s electoral dynamics and the strategic maneuvers at play ahead of the critical by-elections in Jalandhar West.
