The UT Administration has decided to set up a Regional Institute of Allied Health Sciences (RIAHS) in the city.

The senior officials of UT Administration led by Home cum Health Secretary Anil Kumar on Wednesday visited various sites in Chandigarh which are proposed for setting up RIAHS. During the visit to GMCH-32, the officials of Architecture and Engineering department pointed out that an area of approximately two acres close to the road dividing Sector 31 from Industrial Area, Phase-II, very close to Asha Deep Building and the roundabout can be considered for making the academic block of RIAHS.

A senior official of the UT Administration said, “The  area in Sector 48 opposite BSNl building very close to roundabout can house academic complex of RIAHS. For residential area including hostel of RIAHS an area across the road from residential complex of GMCH and behind the commercial belt was suggested during the visit.” The team also visited Sector 53 Regional Trauma Centre area to explore the feasibility of setting up of RIAHS close to this area.

The official informed that the final decision regarding construction of RIAHS complex-academic as well as residential will be taken after reviewing the pros & cons of the suggested sites. “During a visit to GMCH-32, it was decided that Regional Institute of Allied Health Sciences (RIAHS) would not come up in GMCH complex in Sector 32. And, the area behind the Block-E would be developed as Sports -cum-recreational complex with provision for car parking. “This is important in view of the possibility of increase of MBBS admissions from 50 to 100 every year,” said Home Secretary Anil Kumar during the visit.

The state-of-the-art Sports-cum-recreational complex to be constructed in this area would be similar to the Sports complex that has been established in Manipal University. Home-cum-Health Secretary suggested that facilities established by Manipal University can be inspected and a visit to the University must be planned in the near future for this purpose.

later, he also visited Regional Institute of Mentally Handicapped (RIMH), Sector 31, Chandigarh.
