Rescue works fail to make headway for second day

Operations to rescue three workers of Himalayan Construction Company, who are trapped in a tunnel at Tihra, 15 km from Bilaspur, on Monday failed to make any headway.

The Border Roads Organisation, an organisation under the Defence Ministry that has been involved in the construction of the Rohtang tunnel, was deployed for the rescue operation.

The workers identified as Satish Tomar, Mani Ram and Hriday Ram were trapped when a huge portion of the tunnel caved in around 9 PM on Saturday and there has been no progress even after 45 hours as rescue operations are hampered due to periodic slides within the tunnel.

"The continuous rolling down of debris from the hilltop is hampering the rescue operation," National Highways Authority of India project director Satish Kaul told reporters.

"We are trying to insert a pipe into the debris so that the struck workers could be safely evacuated," said he.

"For the past few days, huge cracks and fissures surfaced in a rock inside the tunnel. The company had been ignoring it and due to its negligence the accident occurred," one of the survivors told police.

The amount of muck is huge and efforts to provide an escape route have not succeeded. Authorities have now sought the help of Border Roads Organisation.

Huge quantity of muck has blocked the tunnel in a 100 mts patch and the condition of the workers was not known.
