On the request of Punjab Minorities Commission member Tarsem Ahmed, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday directed the DGP Prisons to exempt the Muslim inmates lodged in different jails across the State from hard labour during the month of Holy Ramzan starting from July 9.

A decision to this effect was taken by Badal following a meeting with Ahmed, who called on the Chief Minister here. A spokesperson of the Chief Minister's Office said that Badal asked DGP Prisons to issue instructions to all the jail superintendents to ensure that all the Muslims inmates should be allowed to perform prayers during the month of holy Ramzan, for which they undergo fasting according to the tenets of Islam.

Badal also asked the DGP Prisons to ensure strict compliance of the instructions keeping in view the religious sentiments of the Muslim community.
