Rajnath to meet northern States' leaders on Sept 23

BJP will soon look into the names of candidates who will fight the electoral battle for it from this part of the region.

Party president Rajnath Singh is scheduled to meet the top rung of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from five states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory of Chandigarh, on September 23 in the city.

Besides looking into the names of probable candidates, the party is expected to chalk out a strategy for the big win in the crucial war for supremacy early next year.

The senior leadership of all the five units of the BJP will put their heads together with the BJP national president Rajnath Singh at a joint meeting to formulate the strategy for the ensuing 2014 lok Sabha elections.

The states would be represented by the party core groups which generally include at least 12-14 prominent leaders of the State, including the State unit presidents, former presidents, general secretaries, national officer-bearers, the leader of legislative party, among others.

"National president Rajnath Singh is coming in the city to discuss the pre lok Sabha poll strategy with five states of the northern region. He will reach here on September 22 and stay here for the entire day on September 23 to hold a joint meeting," Punjab BJP president Kamal Sharma told The Pioneer.

The national president would take feedback from all the states regarding the response to party activities and its programmes in every State, besides its position, the issues to be raised and may also discuss the probable candidates for the elections.

"This would be a meeting of all the northern states and he is mainly coming here to assess and have a reality check of the ground situation in all states," said Sharma.

Divulging details about the State party unit's outline for the meeting, Sharma said he would apprise the party's national head with the BJP's situation in the State and also get guidance from him about the future course of action.

"We will tell him about the party's programmes, at both national and State levels, besides the party's constituency wise activities and the programmes and events that the high command has asked us to organise and respond to it," added Sharma.

The saffron party has already gone into poll mode and has started appointing observers in all the 13 parliamentary constituencies of the State, appointing heads of its various cells or morchas (wings), strengthening the party at the block as well as the district levels.

Moreover, the party's youth wing - Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha - is also actively wooing the youngsters to join the saffron brigade in its all India membership drive.

In Punjab, BJP is governing the State in coalition with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The party has only one Member of Parliament, out of the three seats it contests out of a total of 13 in the State.

Party's lone MP from Amritsar constituency, Navjot Singh Sidhu has gone all out to criticise the SAD-BJP government and also the BJP for sidelining him while taking major decisions.

Even as Sharma maintained that the party was unlikely to raise the Sidhu issue during Singh's visit, the sources maintained that the issue may crop up during discussions.
