Not having enough of specialists, the Punjab Government has decided to rope in the specialist and super-specialist doctors from leading medical institutions in the State for treating the patients in Government and civil hospitals across the State.

“I have urged the DMC and CMC management to spare specialist and super-specialist doctors, at least once a week, who will treat the patients coming to the Government hospitals,” said State Health and Medical Education Minister Brahm Mohindra on Sunday after holding meetings with the management of the Dayanand Medical College (DMC) and Hospital, ludhiana, and the Christian Medical College (CMC), ludhiana.

He described it as a major development aimed at providing super specialist treatment and medical care to the poor patients.

DMC’s managing committee’s secretary Prem Gupta assured the Minister that doctors from all the super specialist faculties will be deputed in the Civil Hospital and wherever required once a week.

Similarly, CMC director Dr Abraham Thomas also agreed to the proposal and assured the Minister that he will make available the services of the specialist and super specialist doctors in the civil and Government hospitals.

Mohindra said that the super specialists from the departments of cardiology, neurology, oncology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and others will be available in the Civil Hospitals. While the programme will start from ludhiana, it will be extended all over the state, he said.

The minister disclosed that as part of the government’s agenda to provide affordable medical treatment to common people, particularly to those who cannot go to the private hospitals, he had been working out arrangements with leading medical institutions across the state to spare their specialist and super-specialist doctors for government hospitals.

The programme is likely to be launched in the month of June, the minister added.
