Punjab State Women Commission on Friday raised the issue of plight of women sufferings due to betrayals and exploitations by the NRI grooms with the Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj urging for her help to curb the menace.

Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati, who met the Union Minister in New Delhi, said that the present and previous governments passed many laws to protect the women being exploited by NRIs but somehow the menace of exploitation hasn't been curtailed.

“More than 30,000 legal cases are pending in Punjab alone, in which NRIs presumably abandoning their wives. These exploited women need help immediately,” she said.

Gulati demanded that in case the preliminary inquiry in India reveals that the concerned NRI is in the ambit of conviction, his extradition process should be initiated immediately and his passport be confiscated till he compensate the aggrieved wife.

“This bold decision can save many lives in India, particularly in Punjab, and alert other NRIs who want to twist with the law for their vested interests without fearing its consequences,” she added.

Commission chairperson also urged to take appropriate action and to make stringent laws. She said that the External Affairs Minister assured the appropriate action in the matter.
