Punjab State Women Commission chairperson Manish Gulati on Sunday called upon the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to seek release of jailed labour activist Nodeep alias Navdeep Kaur — a resident of a village in Sri Muktsar Sahib district who is currently lodged in Haryana’s Karnal jail since January 12.
Gulati briefed the Union Minister about circumstances leading to her arrest from Singhu border and her harassment in custody. She requested the Union Minister to protect the constitutional rights of Nodeep Kaur who hails from Giadarh village in Sri Muktsar district.
PSWC chairperson is scheduled to meet Nodeep in Karnal Jail on Monday after she had taken up the matter with her Haryana counterpart and urged to intervene in the matter.
The Haryana State Women Commission (HSWC) had issued written instruction to the Director General, Jails, (Haryana) Selvaraj to ensure legal assistance under Section 3 (10), (1) (f) (k) of the Haryana State Women Commission Act-2012 to Nodeep Kaur besides ensuring the safety and security of the detainee.
HSWC chairperson had also directed the Director General, Jails, to make all necessary arrangements for the meeting, scheduled at 12 noon on February 15, of Punjab State Women's Commission chairperson and Nodeep Kaur.
The Director General has also been asked to submit the action taken report in this regard.
Earlier, the Punjab women panel had taken a “stern notice” of the Nodeep Kaur’s case, seeking a status report from Sonipat Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) by February 15.
Sonipat SSP, through a written communiqué, was directed to get the case of Nodeep Kaur investigated by a senior officer, besides submitting a detailed investigation report within five days, by February 15, following which, the Commission would immediately take further action in the matter.
Besides, Gulati also apprised Shah about the plight of NRIs wives who are abandoned or cheated by the husbands living abroad and demanded justice for them.
Amit Shah promised to look into the matter and resolve the issues.
