Punjab Vigilance Bureau has initiated a probe against the Congress’ former MLA from Pathankot and party’s treasurer Amit Vij over the allegations of corruption.

The probe was initiated after a complaint was submitted against Vij by one Ankit alleging that the Congress leader, during his tenure as Pathankot MLA, had carried out illegal sand mining and corruption in Pathankot Municipal Corporation area. The complaint further alleged that Vij carried out corruption work in connivance with the officers and employees of Pathankot Municipal Corporation.

The allegations in the complaint was also substantiated with some facts, which are being investigated by the Vigilance.

Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau’s headquarters has sent the complaint to the Amritsar Vigilance SSP for investigation, with the directions to submit the report at the earliest.

On the other hand, Vij went on to allege that the complainant, Ankit, was himself had a checkered past and was arrested by Pathankot Police, and is now out on bail.

Giving details, Vij said that on the complaint of Mining Officer Abhishek Atri, a case was registered against Ankit under sections 419, 384, 341 and 120-B, in which it is clear that he used to make recovery by becoming a fake mining officer.

Vij alleged that an attempt has been made to “hatch a political conspiracy against me”.

Adding, Vij said: “Pathankot developed during my tenure which is not tolerated by the opponents and now attempts are being made to defame me by filing such complaints.”

At the same time, he made it clear that he did not have any office of profit portfolio. “I only performed my duty as a public representative,” he said.

Maintaining that till now, Vigilance has not contacted him, Vij said: “But if there will be any investigation, we will fully cooperate…The way the media campaign has been launched against me on the complaint of a criminal, it clearly shows the mentality of the people of the ruling party.”

Vij said that he also has all documents against the complainant and they will soon file a defamation claim against him. At the same time, he appealed to the media to print something based on the facts.
