To prepare skilled labour for the cleaning of cities in a hygienic way, Punjab Government is all set to take an initiative to start a new course under Skill Development Mission.

The State Technical Education Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi, has asked the officials of the Skill Development Mission to prepare a detailed proposal regarding the hygienic cleanliness course and send it to the Union Government for its approval so that it could be started.

Channi, presiding over a review meeting of the Skill Development Mission on Sunday, said there was no special training for labourers involved in the cleaning of the cities and they are still doing cleaning work in a traditional way.

“Due to this, they have to face serious health hazards often...During this training course, the workers would be trained to use scientific tools such as machines, gloves, special shoes and masks during cleaning work,” he said.

The Minister said that after the implementation of this course, the Punjab Skill Development Mission would sign an agreement with the state’s local Government and Health Departments to employ only those workers who have got training from the state’s skill training centres.

Channi issued clear cut instructions to the officers and employees to ensure 100 percent placement of the youth trained under Skill Development Mission. At the same time, he said that the goals set under the Mission by the Union and the State governments must be achieved in scheduled time.

The Technical Education Minister also said that Punjab’s big companies should be empanelled for training the youth under the skill development mission as they already have good infrastructure in the state where the students can get better practical training.

Channi added that under Skill Development Mission, major efforts should be made to train the labour involved in various works related to construction sector which would not just enhance their skills but also be helpful in increasing their earnings.

The Minister also emphasized on providing skilled training to domestic workers under the Mission as “this would increase the quality of work of domestic workers and certificates from skilled training centres would also give them special recognition”.
