Punjab Government on Friday decided to promote the students of Classes V, VIII and X of the state’s School Education Board (PSEB) to the next class.
The decision was announced by the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on the social micro blogging website Twitter after a meeting with the officials of state Education Department in various districts of the State.
As per the decision, the students of Classes V and VII would be promoted to the next classes, along with the students of Class X who would be promoted to the next class on the basis of their performance and marks in the pre-board examinations.
“Have decided to promote students of Class V and VIII to next classes as well as to promote Class X students to next class on the basis of pre-board results. For Class XII examinations, we will follow Government of India’s decision,” the Chief Minister tweeted from his official Twitter handle.
The decision came almost a week after the high powered task force, constituted by the Chief Minister to chalk out the ‘lockdown exit strategy’, had also suggested on the same lines. As per the report, the results of Classes V, and VIII may be declared based on examinations already conducted and students are promoted in the next class.
“Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) may allow schools to declare the results of Class X on the basis of the pre-board exams. With the declaration of the results, the students will start preparing themselves for the next class and at the same time, the schools will also be able to enroll students in the Class XI,” it stated.
For Class XII students, the report underlined that almost 70 percent of the papers have already been completed. “Meanwhile, it is recommended that the Class XII students may wait for a while, or in the alternative, the Board may consider holding examination of the remaining papers by creating more centres so that the social distance is maintained,” it stated.
Already, the State Cabinet, on April 10, had decided to promote Class V and VIII students of Punjab School Education Board based on the examinations given by them before the imposition of curfew in the state. The Cabinet had also decided to cancel the remaining two papers of Class V.
Notably, PSEB had conducted three examinations of Class V before imposition of curfew in the state on March 23. Besides, the practical exams for Class VIII are pending. The state Cabinet Minister Vijay Inder Singla said that the Board would declare the results without conducting any further examinations for both the classes.
Only on Friday, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it would conduct the pending Class X board exams for the students of Northeast Delhi and the pending Class XII exams for the whole of the country between July 1 and 15.
