Punjab to get three more NRI police stations

Published on:

In its tally of six police stations fully dedicated for the Non-Residents Indians, Punjab Government will soon add three more NRI police stations. The three new police stations would be set up at Jalandhar (Rural), ludhiana (Rural) and Amritsar. Already, six NRI police stations have been set up at Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, ludhiana, Moga, Nawanshahr and Kapurthala.

“Six police stations were setup for NIRs at Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, ludhiana, Moga, Nawanshahr and Kapurthala in 2008. Now, keeping in view the demand of NRI Punjabis, the number has been increased to nine with three more NRI police stations are being set up at Jalandhar (Rural), ludhiana (Rural) and Amritsar,” said Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Sunday.

He claimed that these police stations had helped in solving many marriage related issues of the NRIs with the help of Community Affairs Division in collaboration with Punjab State Commission for Women. 296 complaints had been redressed in this year till June by the NRI Cell, he added.

NRI police stations in the State are being setup exclusively for non-resident Punjabis, to address their complaints in a time bound manner. Majithia said that as per directions of the Punjab Government, the FIR would not be registered against any NRI without the investigation by the DSP.

“The State Government has deputed an officer of the rank of inspector general to directly look into the complaints of the NRIs,” he added. If a person belonging to the NRI community is not satisfied with the investigation at the lower level, he can directly approach the IGP (Community Division) at police headquarters, said Majithia.

NRI Affairs IGP Gurpreet Kaur Deo said that new pages with comprehensive relevant information have been created on the Punjab Police website for the assistance of NRI community.
