Punjab Government on Monday invited e-tender to install CCTV cameras in the roadways buses and at the bus stands to provide better security to commuters.
“In the initial stage, there is a proposal to install cameras and digital video recorders in 100 buses, 18 depots and three bus stands,” a spokesperson of the state Transport Department said. “E-tender has been invited from the reputed registered firms or companies for this purpose and they have been mandated to complete the installation of cameras in a fixed schedule,” he said.
Notably, on April 29, a woman and her teenage daughter were allegedly molested and thrown off a running bus in Moga, leaving the girl dead and mother seriously wounded. “The department had decided to install the cameras which would act as a deterrent to such cases,” the spokesperson added. There are nearly 90 bus stands in the state while over 3,000 Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS buses ply on the roads.
