Punjab Police planning to introduce yoga classes for policemen

Published on:

Punjab police may soon find itself standing head over heels. For, the top brass of the Punjab Police is contemplating yoga sessions for cops with characteristic potbellies.

The move comes soon after the nation practically went gaga over the celebration of International Yoga Day on June 21, promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Already, the Bathinda police administration has made the yoga sessions mandatory for its police personnel to make them fit. In fact, the Bathinda police authorities have strictly directed to attend the classes.

Impressed by the results, the Punjab police top brass is now mulling to introduce the yoga classes for the policemen.  “The yoga sessions in Bathinda is giving good results, and that is why are thinking to replicate their model in the entire state,” a senior police official told The Pioneer.

The official said that as of now, just the proposal has been floated, but the senior functionaries are seriously thinking to have yoga sessions. “Yoga has proved its worth. Only recently, the entire world celebrated the yoga day. Almost everyone is embracing yoga in their day-to-day life, and it seems great idea to introduce yoga for our police force,” he said.

“Not only the force looks completely out of shape but the extra fat is also causing too many health problems for them, ranging from diabetes, hypertension and sleep disorders to breathing problems,” said the official.

“The police personnel has a tough job to do, sometimes long duty hours, stress levels are also high…many have potbellies…so, we believe that yoga would help them to a great extent,” said the official, adding that Bathinda has set an example.

In Bathinda, the policemen were given training by yoga experts and teachers to keep the police fit and healthy. The initiative was taken after the yearly medical report of the police officials had revealed that they were affected by one or other disease due to work stress.

Earlier, in 2007, Bathinda police authority had adopted a novel way to shed those extra kilos by dancing to the tunes of bhangra. It was noticed that in just two weeks, the force had collectively lost over 500 kg.
