In a joint operation with the Delhi Police special cell, Punjab Police on Tuesday nabbed five gangsters after a seven-hour-long operation in a village near Bhogpur town of Jalandhar district.
Their arrest came as the police took the help of drones, dog squads, ropes, and other gadgets.
Those arrested were identified as the members of a gang, headed by gangster Lakhbir Singh Landa, who is operating from Canada. The teams of Jalandhar Rural Police and Delhi police special cell carried out the joint search operation leading to the arrest of five persons along with the weapons, including a Glock pistol. Their sixth associate is absconding.
Jalandhar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Swarandeep Singh said that the operation was jointly carried out by the Punjab Police and the Delhi Police special cell. “Acting on a tip-off received by Phillaur Station House Officer (SHO) Surinder Kumar, we raided the gangsters’ hideout, which led to an exchange of fire. The accused fired three rounds at the police team and the cops also retaliated,” he said.
The SSP said that the police used drones to locate the gangsters hiding in sugarcane fields. “Two of the five gangsters were wanted by the Delhi Police. Three weapons, including a Glock pistol, two .32mm revolvers, and three motorcycles were seized from the accused. Initial investigations have revealed that the accused have links with Lakhbir Singh Landa gang,” he added.
