With still eight years to go, 1998-batch IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh on tuesday hung up his boots after seeking voluntary retirement.
His request for the premature retirement and quitting the Punjab Police was accepted by the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh only a day before after initially refusing it.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) had sought voluntary retirement days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court quashed the probe by the SIT, headed by him, into the 2015 Kotkapura firing incident, besides directing the constitution of a new special investigation team (SIT) without Kunwar Vijay as its member. The detailed judgment is yet to come.
The state’s Home Department on Tuesday issued a notification, following the Chief Minister’s approval. As per the notification, 52-year-old IPS officer’s request for voluntary retirement has been accepted with effect from April 15.
Besides, the Home Department has also waived the three-month notice period required under the VRS (voluntary retirement scheme) rules, as was requested by the IPS officer.
The IPS officer had submitted his resignation and requested voluntary retirement on April 11, a couple of days after the High Court passed strictures against him.
His resignation triggered a political slugfest in Punjab as he was heading the SIT probing the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan police firing cases.
Kunwar Partap, who otherwise was to retire in 2029, had assured the Government of full help and support even outside his service in connection with the probe led by him in two cases of police firing.
