Punjab Government on Tuesday launched the portal for online registration of domestic workers.
“Now, the domestic workers would be extended the benefits of welfare schemes being run by the labour Department, said the state labour Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu after the launch and handing over the photo identity cards to some of the domestic workers.
He said: “Till date, there was no provision for the registration of domestic workers, which left them out of the ambit of State Government’s welfare schemes. Besides, they have been subjected to exploitation and ill-treatment at the hands of their employees.”
Sidhu said that now, after the registration of the domestic workers, they will be provided a unique photo identity card and they will now be eligible for availing the benefits of welfare schemes being run by the labour department.
Earlier, Sidhu held a high level meeting with the representative of all the trade unions and labour organizations.
The representatives informed the Minister that no meeting has ever been convened by the previous SAD-BJP Government during their 10-year tenure. To which, the Minister assured that from now on, the meeting would be held after every three months.
