A delegation of jewellers from Punjab on Sunday met Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal to put up their case to roll back the excise duty levied on jewelers by Narendra Modi led Central Government.

AAP leaders Durgesh Pathak, Aman Arora and Jassi Sekhon accompanied the delegation.

Criticizing the move of the Central Government, Kejriwal said that Delhi government is against levying excise tax on the jewelers.

He said that the excise duty will serve no benefit to the government and because of corruption the money will go in the vain. It will also put more burden on the jewelers who are already struggling because of worldwide economy slowdown, said he.

Arvind Kejriwal had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi reminding him that it is shocking to know that the same person who was Chief Minister of Gujarat in year 2012 and opposed the decision of UPA government of levying excise duty is now implementing the same decision.

Kejriwal also wrote a letter to the Chief Ministers of all states of India to oppose the decision and stand with the jewelers. He also wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Punjab, to go against the decision of the central Government.

On Tuesday, a resolution regarding opposing the excise tax on the jewelers’ will also be passed by the Delhi Assembly, said he.

Kejriwal has got appointments with President, Prime Minister and Finance Minister to meet them and put up the issue.

Kejriwal also criticized the police action on jewelers on Saturday at ludhiana where Punjab Police lathicharged the peacefully protesting jewelers.
