Punjab has 4 days to clear wheat, payment: Congress

Published on:

Punjab Congress on Saturday served a four days’ ultimatum to the State Government to ensure that all the wheat lying in the grain markets across the State was lifted by May 4 and all the payments were cleared with the farmers, failing which it will launch a mass agitation.

A high level meeting of the party leaders was held here under Congress Secretary and Punjab incharge Harish Chaudhary. The meeting reviewed with serious concern the sluggish progress in lifting of the wheat. It was revealed in the meeting that the farmers were not getting the payments, said a party spokesman. It was decided that the Congress will wait till May 4 to give four days to the Government to lift all the wheat lying in the mandis and clear all the outstanding dues of the farmers.

In case, the Government fails to do so, the party will launch a State-wide agitation which will include gherao of the mandis, the ministers and blockade of roads to highlight the farmers’ plight and force the Government to lift their produce and make the payments on time, he added.
