With the dual aim of strengthening the sports activities in all schools and encouraging students to prepare themselves for national and international level events, Punjab Government has decided to establish six sports zones across the State.
“Bathinda, Patiala, ludhiana, Ferozepur, Amritsar and Jalandhar have been identified for setting up these sports zones,” said the state Education Minister Sikandar Singh Maluka. The initiative was taken by the Punjab Government especially after attaining second position in All India 59th Sports Tournament held at New Delhi recently. Maluka said that each zone would be supervised by an organiser and the players will be provided residential accommodation and excellent coaching.
“Overall facilities would be provided to promote and maintain the standard of sports in all zones and the organisers would personally monitor the sports activities to encourage the players to compete at higher level,” he added. The Minister further said that the students would be encouraged to take part in individual events athletics, boxing and wrestling etc. for which training camps would be organised from time to time.
