Punjab Government has submitted proposal to rename Sunam Railway Station as Sunam Udham Singh Wala Railway Station to Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
In a communication to advocate HC Arora by the Department of Revenue and Rehabilitation, Punjab, it has been said that a request to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has been sent on June 24, 2016 to grant approval for changing the name of Sunam Railway Station as Sunam Udham Singh Wala Railway Station at the earliest.
Arora had filed a Public Interest litigation and later a Contempt Petition in Punjab and Haryana High Court for directions to Punjab for naming the Sunam Railway station after Shaheed Udham Singh.
The proposal sent by Punjab states that the name of Sunam was already changed to Sunam Udham Singh Wala in January, 2006, with the approval of Government of India.
And because “Sunam Udham Singh Wala is the birth place of Shaheed Udham Singh and it is in view of the supreme sacrifice for the nation made by Shaheed Udham Singh, it is being proposed that name of Sunam Railway Station may be changed as “Sunam Udham Singh Wala Railway Station”.
