As the farmers’ agitation against the Centre’s three farm laws receiving massive support from all sections, a family from a village in Punjab’s Muktsar district has extended the support to the farmers’ cause in a unique way.

In an apparent attempt to make a notable contribution in the farmers’ struggle, a family at Sheikhu village in Muktsar district placed a donation box at a wedding reception function, asking the invitees not to give “shagun” to the newly-weds but to donate for the ongoing farmers’ protest at the Delhi border.

A short video clip of the reception, also shared by Punjabi singer Kanwar Grewal on his Facebook page, is being going viral on the social media, wherein the DJ is appealing to the gathering to put the ‘shagun’ amount in the donation box.In the video, the special ‘donation box’ was shown inside the venue, next to the dance floor, with the DJ making an appeal to the guests to donate money for the farmers instead of giving gifts or ‘shagun’ to the couple.

The incident took place at the wedding reception of Abhijeet Singh, nephew of Sheikhu village sarpanch Jasdeep Singh Brar, held on December 7 at the village.

“We have collected around Rs one lakh and will in a day or two go to the Delhi borders and, after finding out what is needed by the farmers there, buy those items and give them there and then,” said Jasdeep Singh Brar.

Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal and Punjab Deputy Speaker Ajaib Singh Bhatti attended the marriage and also gave ‘shagun’, that “we put it in the donation box. We have 50 acres of land. Besides we are commission agents. This is the least which we can contribute from our side towards our farmer brothers,” he added.
