Punjab Congress in talks with CPI

Working towards putting up a united front, the Punjab Congress on Wednesday initiated talks with the Communist Party of India for alliance for the forthcoming Assembly elections in the State.

The State Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh and party’s State affairs in-charge Asha Kumari had detailed discussion with CPI national secretary and Rajya Sabha member D Raja in the national capital to explore the possibilities.

The two parties have contested several elections in Punjab in alliance with each other earlier.

The dialogue process had been started earlier too but the state committee of the party was not favourably inclined.

However, now, it is getting increasingly realised that contesting elections for the sake of elections would be meaningless as the left parties can’t win even a single seat at their own in the State.

The alliance between the Congress and the CPI is in the interest of both the parties. The CPI has certain pockets in the state where the party is in a position to influence results, and can win under this arrangement.
