Punjab Cong seeks inquiry into death of 14-month-old girl

Holding the SAD-BJP Government and district administration responsible for the death of 14-month-old girl child of one of the on-strike EGS teachers, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) on Friday sought an inquiry into her death, besides demanding action against the guilty officials.

The party has also demanded from the State Government to accept the demands of these teachers, who are on strike since long, and staging protest in harsh winter cold conditions, that led to death of an infant. Also strongly condemning the brutality shown by the police with teachers at Bathinda, the State Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa decried SAD-BJP Government for turning blind eye to agony of striking teachers. “Even SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has not visited the mother of Ruth who is still sitting in freezing cold under open sky,” said Bajwa.

Bajwa, who was in Bathinda to preside over the dharna by Congress workers demanding CBI inquiry into drug scam, visited the striking teachers and expressed his solidarity with them. He also met the bereaved parents of Ruth and shared their grief. Bajwa asked the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to order an inquiry into her death and take action against the guilty officials.

The State Congress chief, later addressing the Congress workers at dharna, said that all sections of Punjab Government employees were agitating to get their demands accepted. Meanwhile, party spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira said that the death “due to inhuman and insensitive attitude of the police, raises a big question mark over the so-called ‘Nanhi-Chaan’ programme of local MP Harsimrat Kaur. It only goes to show that the programme is nothing but a political gimmick aimed at making electoral gains, by whipping up the sentiments of women folk”.
