Reaffirming his government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday announced an exclusive recruitment drive to address the backlog of 1,754 direct recruitment posts across various state departments. The initiative aimed at empowering PwDs by creating equitable opportunities in public service.

Mann, presiding over a review meeting of the Social Justice and Child Welfare Department at his official residence in Chandigarh, emphasized the urgent need to expedite the recruitment process. He revealed that an additional 556 promotional posts for PwDs had also been identified, urging officers to fill these vacancies swiftly.

In a significant move, the Chief Minister approved amendments to the rules under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Mann highlighted that this reform would further safeguard the rights of PwDs and facilitate their integration into mainstream society. “Persons with Disabilities are the true heroes of society, excelling in life despite numerous challenges. It is our duty to ensure they live with dignity and pride," he asserted.

Mann outlined several landmark initiatives taken by the state for the holistic development of PwDs. Notably, the Government recently sanctioned free bus travel for dependents of visually impaired individuals, with a notification expected soon. Additionally, a 50 percent fare concession in Punjab Roadways and PRTC buses has benefited over 7.5 lakh commuters in the past year, with Rs 2.19 crore allocated for this purpose.

The Chief Minister also detailed the financial support extended to PwDs under various schemes. Over Rs 278.17 crore has been disbursed to 2.65 lakh beneficiaries under the State Pension Scheme, and Rs 3.37 crore in scholarships has reached 12,607 disabled students to promote education. Furthermore, Rs 23.16 crore has been released under the SIPDA scheme to enhance accessibility in 144 government buildings.

Mann lauded the state’s efforts to enable economic independence among PwDs, including facilitating loans worth Rs 1.31 crore at concessional rates for 105 individuals over the past two years. Additionally, 21 PwDs were allotted booths by organizations like Milkfed and Markfed to support self-employment.

“The welfare of PwDs is not just a policy but a priority for this government. We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that this vital section of society is empowered and uplifted,” Mann affirmed.
