Despite its not-so-successful run in New Delhi, Punjab Government has decided to implement the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) in major cities in Punjab.
To start with, Amritsar and ludhiana would be first covered under the project.Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, who is visiting Dubai and Istanbul (Turkey) these days to study major projects in these cities, on Wednesday, said that major cities ludhiana and Amritsar will be the first ones to have the BRTS.
Accompanied by a team of officers from Punjab, Sukhbir took a ride on the BRTS in Istanbul a day before, and conducted an in-depth analysis of the system. The BRTS transports over 7,50,000 people in Istanbul everyday.
Sukhbir, in a statement, said that the Government has studied the possibilities of BRTS for Punjab and it would be introduced in Amritsar and ludhiana in its first phase. Dedicated corridor would be created for plying of these low floor buses and no other vehicle would get an access to this corridor. It will be implemented in the next two years. He said that the Punjab Government had studied the failed BRTS model of Delhi and were aware of its shortcomings.
