On the second day of the budget session, Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday paid tributes to 282 Indian soldiers whose mortal remains were retrieved from a well in Ajnala near Amritsar, besides 26 people who left for heavenly abode during the inter-session period.

In 10-minute proceedings during the morning hours, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal paid rich tributes on the behalf of the entire House, and recalled the services of the former Speaker, Ministers, ex-MlA, eminent politicians, freedom fighters, and others related to the field of performing arts, during the obituary references in the Assembly.

Atwal led the House in paying tributes to the martyrs who were slain during the 1857 mutiny by the British and their bodies were dumped in a well at Ajnala on the Indo-Pak border in Amritsar district of the State.

Mortal remains of 282 Indian soldiers were retrieved from Shaheedan da Khuh (well of martyrs) by volunteers of NGOs and local Gurdwara Management Committee since the digging, which was started on February 28 and ended on Monday. In addition, at least 16 freedom fighters who died in the interim period between the last meeting of the Assembly and the present session were also remembered.
