Panjab University have announced September 4 as the day for student council election leaving the party members and party leaders of various student bodies irked.
Most of the student leaders have started their last minute preparations but NSUI supporters and leaders were upset with the announcement
of dates.
They are of the view that the university has purposefully given less time for preparations which in a way is a breach of democratic rights of the students.
Prabhpreet, campus president of Students’ Federation of India said, “The University will be closed on August 28 as it is holiday for Janmashtami. Then it is weekends. Which will leave us only with few days to campaign and there is a huge area to cover.”
“We also have to make preparations for the PU official radio and the website and seeing the number of parties that have entered the political arena this year it is surely going to cause a chaos at the last moment. The main campaigning starts after the student list are finalized and for that also we will only have two days.”
However what is being welcome news is that this year the election is going to be held on Wednesday unlike Friday which was the usual trend.
Sumit Goklaney of Punjab University Student Association, one of the oldest parties in the university, said that we are expecting a better voter turn out this year as earlier when it was held on Fridays, many student didn’t turnout as they got an extended weekend and they had their own plans.
