Sending out a clear message that disrespect could not be shown to the esteemed chair of the Speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha’s privilege committee has issued summons to the SAD president Sukhbir Badal and lok Insaaf Party MlA Simarjit Singh Bains to appear before it in person on February 6.

The Committee of Privileges has issued summons to for allegedly showing disrespect to the Speaker during the Budget session, held in June last year.

Both leaders were accused of using objectionable language against the Speaker Rana Kanwar Pal Singh during the budget session, said a spokesperson.

The committee has 12 members and is chaired by Congress MlA from Dera Baba Nanak Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. Besides, seven Congress MlAs — Angad Singh, Pargat Singh, Ramanjit Singh Sikki, Nathu Ram, Pritam Singh Kotbhai, Sunder Sham Arora and Tarsem Singh, two AAP MlAs — Baldev Singh and Rupinder Kaur Ruby, and two SAD MlAs — lakhbir Singh lodhinangal and Pawan Kumar Tinu — are its members.

During the Vidhan Sabha budget session, Sukhbir was accused of shout slogans against the Speaker. Sukhbir and Bains, during the proceedings of the session, had several times blamed the Speaker for not allowing the opposition members to speak and raise people’s issues.

The budget session had witnessed unruly scenes with turban flying, seats uprooted, MlAs involved in fisticuffs with the assembly marshalls or guards, and what not. Speaker had then suspended all AAP MlAs from the House proceedings for the session.

In fact, Congress senior MlA and Deputy Speaker of Vidhan Sabha Ajaib Singh Bhatti had also submitted a complaint against Sukhbir Badal for his speech against him during party’s political rally at the Maghi Mela.
