President cancels Kurukshetra visit

Following Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s death, President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday cancelled his visit to Kurukshetra in Haryana to inaugurate the ‘International Gita Mahotsav’.

The Haryana Government on Tuesday observed one-day state mourning as a mark of respect to J Jayalalithaa and decided to cancel cultural and other celebratory events during the ‘Gita Mahotsav’.

The low-key inauguration was done by Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and Chief Minister Manohar lal Khattar.

The CM told the mediapersons that cultural and other celebratory events have been cancelled at the Mahotsav. Other events like seminars and discussions will be held as scheduled, he added.

Expressing solidarity with the people of Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister described Jayalalithaa as a leader of the masses, who devoted her life to serving the people.

He also prayed the Almighty that the departed soul may rest in peace.

Notably, the BJP Government in Haryana was preparing for the past over one year for the multi-crore extravaganza on scripture Bhagvad Gita from December 6. The Mahotsav, to be held from December 6 to 10, will see the participation of scholars from across the country and abroad.
