'Positive Thinking' for Burail Jail women inmates BY FORTIS MOHAlI

As part of International Women’s Day celebrations, Fortis Hospital Mohali on Friday held a talk on ‘Positive Thinking’ for the women inmates of Burail Jail at the jail premises. Simmi Waraich, a Psychiatrist at Fortis Hospital, counseled the women on developing a positive outlook and finding a self-identity beyond the prison walls. IG (Prisons) Maneesh Chaudhary said, “The women inmates who were part of the audience are serving time for various crimes, including murder, dowry death and theft. This was a unique opportunity for them to come out of that negativity and develop a sense of purpose.” Keeping to this year’s International Women’s Day theme of ‘Inspiring Change’, Waraich said it was important for the women to take part in the day-to-day activities like kitchen and laundry services at the

jail to develop a sense of purpose. “Most of them don’t feel positive about themselves. However, it’s important to instill a belief that they can change their lives when they’re back in the society,” she stated. Answering questions raised by the inmates, Waraich said though the crime in itself might be big, the women needed to work on ‘second chances’. “Your thoughts, actions and words need to focus on building positivity,” she added.
